Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s illegal and dangerous warning to illegal aliens of an impending ICE raid apparently didn’t get through to everyone she was attempting to “protect.”
On Tuesday Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced they’d arrested over 150 people in Northern California since Sunday for violating federal immigration law. Unfortunately Schaaf wasn’t one of them.
ICE Director Thomas Honan was not pleased with Schaaf’s “public safety” announcement, saying it was done at the expense of public safety – and at the expense of ICE officers, who were forced to apprehend their targets in a more dangerous situation.
“[Schaaf’s announcement] further increased that risk for my officers and alerted criminal aliens — making clear that this reckless decision was based on her political agenda with the very federal laws that ICE is sworn to uphold.”
“Thanks to the dedicated and professional work of ICE deportation officers, we were able to remove many public safety threats from the streets of the Bay Area during the past few days.”
“However, 864 criminal aliens and public safety threats remain at large in the community, and I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor’s irresponsible decision. Unlike the politicians who attempt to undermine ICE’s critical mission, our officers will continue to fulfill their sworn duty to protect public safety.”
One of the criminal illegal aliens ICE apprehended was Armando Nunez-Salgado, who seems to be a pillar of the community:
Salgado’s criminal career goes back 18 years, to when he was just 20 years old. He’s a documented gang member who has been sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison over that time span and has been removed by ICE four times. Of those criminal illegal aliens who remain at large, at least two of them have been removed by ICE eight times. Others listed in an NBC story have been removed by ICE multiple times.
Deportation is necessary, but without real border security (like a wall) they will shamelessly keep coming back.
